On Tuesday, May 20, we hosted another inspiring session of Conversations with Leaders, featuring an engaging dialogue between Dr. Julian Abel and Dr. Mary Lou Kelley.

Dr. Abel, a UK-based palliative care physician and a global leader in the compassionate communities movement, joined Dr. Kelley, a Canadian researcher, advocate, and Compassionate Ottawa volunteer, for a powerful conversation about the importance of social connection and grassroots action.

Together, they explored Talk, Learn, Connect (TLC)—a community connector program developed in the UK that strengthens neighbourhood relationships and helps people support one another through life’s challenges.

Dr. Abel shared his experiences from the UK, illustrating how TLC fosters mutual care, combats isolation, and creates more resilient, compassionate communities. Dr. Kelley offered thoughtful reflections on how this model could be adapted for the Canadian context, particularly as we work to support aging and end-of-life care in ways that honour dignity and community.

It was an insightful exchange that reminded us of the power we all hold to make a difference—starting right in our own neighbourhoods.

If you missed it—or want to be inspired again—you can watch the full event here.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and stay tuned for more meaningful conversations ahead!
