The Compassionate Ottawa Board Chair\, Monica Patten\, and Project Consultant\, Suzanne Taschereau\, will describe how Compassionate Ottawa intends to revise its work to accommodate the needs of community groups\, especially those who are underserved. DESCRIPTION:This live virtual event will feature a conversation between Dr. Jeff Turnbull\, local physician and Medical Director of Ottawa Inner City Health\, and Jack McCarthy\, Vice-Chair of Compassionate Ottawa. Together\, they will talk about compassion on the streets of Ottawa and the conditions that some of the most vulnerable in our community live in. From there\, enter your name and email address and click “Register.” You will then receive a confirmation email from Zoom with the link to access the session. \nDr. Jeff Turnbull\, former chief of staff at The Ottawa Hospital and chief of clinical quality at Health Quality Ontario\, has pursued an interest in poverty and its effect on health nationally and internationally.  He is one of the founders and is currently the Medical Director of Ottawa Inner City Health. As well\, he has been involved in education and health services initiatives to enhance community and institutional capacity and sustainable development in Bangladesh\, Africa and the Balkans. He is the recipient of several national and international grants and awards\, including the Order of Canada. \nJack McCarthy\, Vice-Chair of Compassionate Ottawa\, was the Executive Director of the Somerset West Community Health Centre from 1989 to 2016. Passionate about community development\, Jack is a former Chair of the National Association of CHCs as well as the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres in Ottawa. \nThe first 500 registrants will be able to join the session via Zoom; others will be redirected to the live-stream on YouTube via the Compassionate Ottawa channel. DESCRIPTION:This live virtual event will feature a conversation between Kelli Stajduhar\, professor in the School of Nursing and Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria\, and Janet Dunbrack\, former Executive Director of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and an active volunteer with Compassionate Ottawa. Together\, they will talk about what is happening (or not) in Canada regarding caregiving and what role Compassionate Ottawa\, and others\, might play in tackling this ongoing and worrying crisis. She has worked in oncology\, palliative care\, and gerontology for 30 years as a practicing nurse\, educator\, and researcher. Her clinical work and research have focused on health service needs for those at the end-of-life and their families\, and on the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations. \nJanet Dunbrack is a retired health policy consultant based in Ottawa and an active volunteer for Compassionate Ottawa and Hospice Care Ottawa. Much of her professional work involved issues of family caregivers\, cancer\, chronic disease management\, HIV/AIDS\, palliative care\, and strategic planning for clients including the federal government and national health organizations. She has been involved in hospice palliative care for more than 30 years as a professional and volunteer. She is Past Chair of Hospice Care Ottawa\, is a former Executive Director of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association\, and served on the Board of Carefor (formerly VON Canada) for a number of years. \nThe first 500 registrants will be able to join the session via Zoom; others will be redirected to the live-stream on YouTube via the Compassionate Ottawa channel. DESCRIPTION:Une conversation inspirante entre deux leaders! La plupart des gens sont mal à l’aise auprès des personnes mourantes et de leurs proches. Ils se demandent: Quoi faire? Quoi dire? Comment être? Myriam LaVoie et Lise Beauchemin s’entretiennent sur l’accompagnement en fin de vie et l’importance de prendre soin de soi\, même si cela semble impossible pour les personnes aidantes. Myriam et Lise comptent ensemble plus de 45 années d’expérience professionnelle en soins palliatifs pour adultes et pour enfants. Elles ont formé et accompagné de nombreuses équipes de bénévoles et de professionnels en Ontario et au Québec. Une période de questions suivra la conversation. \nInscrivez-vous iciMyriam LaVoie a plus de 35 ans d’expérience en soins palliatifs en tant qu’infirmière autorisée et gestionnaire de services bénévoles. Elle a complété sa maîtrise en sciences sociales à l’Université d’Ottawa. Elle partage ses connaissances et habiletés avec les bénévoles et les professionnelles qui œuvrent dans l’accompagnement en fin de vie. Son implication communautaire l’amène à Compassion Ottawa où elle collabore à l’élaboration des ateliers Le deuil et le chagrin. Myriam est auteure et écrivaine. Elle a publié: Au coeur du Passage: Amour\, espoir et réconciliation en fin de vie et When Death Knocks on Your Door: Care Partners in Oneness. \nLise Beauchemin est native de la ville d’Ottawa. Elle a est une fière franco-ontarienne qui a travaillé dans le domaine de la petite enfance comme éducatrice\, formatrice et bénévole pour la majorité de sa carrière. De plus\, elle a travaillé dans le domaine des soins palliatifs pédiatriques pour plus de 11 ans comme coordonnatrice de bénévoles. Lise partage sa vie avec son conjoint\, ses trois enfants et ses cinq petits-enfants. Elle est bénévole avec une maison de soins palliatifs et Compassion Ottawa. Pendant ses temps libres elle aime faire de la couture\, le vélo et le ski alpin.

Together\, they will discuss André’s journey and approach to journalism; his thoughts on the community’s role in palliative care\, caregiving\, and home care; his suggestions for how public policies should be reshaped to better support Canadians; and more. There will be time for questions and comments following the discussion. \nRegister hereAndré Picard is a health reporter and columnist for The Globe and Mail\, where he has been a staff writer since 1987. He is also the author of five bestselling books\, including his most recent\, entitled\, “Neglected No More.” André is an eight-time nominee for the National Newspaper Awards\, Canada’s top journalism prize\, and past winner of prestigious Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service Journalism. He was named Canada’s first “Public Health Hero” by the Canadian Public Health Association\, as a “Champion of Mental Health” by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health\, and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedication to improving healthcare. \nLouise Hanvey\, RN\, BN\, MHA\, has worked with many national palliative care initiatives. She was the Project Director for the Advance Care Planning in Canada Project with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association. DESCRIPTION:This live virtual event will feature a conversation between Kerrie Noonan and Pam Grassau about compassionate communities in Australia\, the successes and challenges of building a compassionate community\, and a way to understand more about a community’s skills\, experience\, social actions\, and knowledge surrounding death\, dying\, caregiving and loss. There will be time for questions and comments following the discussion. \nRegister hereDr. Kerrie Noonan is the director of The Death Literacy Institute. Over the past 25 years\, Kerrie has been working to create a more death literate society\, one where people and communities have the practical know-how needed to plan well and respond to dying\, death and grief. Her research and practice involve death and grief literacy\, compassionate communities\, and end of life care. She is a clinical psychologist and an adjunct researcher at Western Sydney University. She contributes internationally as a faculty member of Fellowship in Palliative Care and as a council member of Public Health Palliative Care International. \nDr. Pamela Grassau is an Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work at Carleton University. Pam’s primary areas of research and practice are patient and family caregiver experiences of advanced illness; end of life and bereavement; interprofessional health care providers working in hospice and palliative care; public health approaches to illness\, end of life and bereavement; and social work research and pedagogies.
