DESCRIPTION:This live virtual event will feature a conversation between Kelli Stajduhar\, professor in the School of Nursing and Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria\, and Janet Dunbrack\, former Executive Director of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and an active volunteer with Compassionate Ottawa. Together\, they will talk about what is happening (or not) in Canada regarding caregiving and what role Compassionate Ottawa\, and others\, might play in tackling this ongoing and worrying crisis. She has worked in oncology\, palliative care\, and gerontology for 30 years as a practicing nurse\, educator\, and researcher. Her clinical work and research have focused on health service needs for those at the end-of-life and their families\, and on the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations. \nJanet Dunbrack is a retired health policy consultant based in Ottawa and an active volunteer for Compassionate Ottawa and Hospice Care Ottawa. Much of her professional work involved issues of family caregivers\, cancer\, chronic disease management\, HIV/AIDS\, palliative care\, and strategic planning for clients including the federal government and national health organizations. She has been involved in hospice palliative care for more than 30 years as a professional and volunteer. She is Past Chair of Hospice Care Ottawa\, is a former Executive Director of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association\, and served on the Board of Carefor (formerly VON Canada) for a number of years. \nThe first 500 registrants will be able to join the session via Zoom; others will be redirected to the live-stream on YouTube via the Compassionate Ottawa channel. DESCRIPTION:This live\, virtual event will feature a conversation with Dr. Hsien Seow and Dr. Samantha Winemaker\, co-hosts of The Waiting Room Revolution podcast and authors of the book Hope for the Best\, Plan for the Rest. In discussion with Dr. Mary Lou Kelley\, Compassionate Ottawa volunteer\, we will hear Dr. Seow and Dr. Winemaker’s real-life stories\, their 7 keys for navigating a serious illness\, how patients and their caregivers can be hopeful and prepared at every step of their journey\, and how much it matters that we all work together. \nDr. Hsien Seow Dr. Hsien Seow is the Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care and Health System Innovation and a Professor in the Department of Oncology at McMaster University. He publishes health care research focused on improving the patient and family experience for those facing serious illness. He is the co-author of The Tao of Innovation: Nine Questions Every Innovator Must Answer. \nDr. Samantha Winemaker Dr. Samantha Winemaker is a palliative care physician who cares for patients with serious illness and their families in the home. She is an Associate Clinical Professor at McMaster University in the Department of Family Medicine\, Division of Palliative Care. She has won numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to palliative care education for health care professionals. \nDr. Mary Lou Kelley Dr. Mary Lou Kelley is a Social Worker\, and was engaged in practice\, teaching\, and research in gerontology and palliative care at Lakehead University for 35 years. She was the recipient of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s Award of Excellence (2011)\, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012)\, and the Ontario Hospice Palliative Care Visionary Award (2015) in recognition of her career contribution to Canadian palliative care. SUMMARY:Conversations With Leaders: Understanding Palliative Care
DESCRIPTION:Palliative care is often misunderstood\, yet it plays an important role in supporting quality of life for people living with serious illness and those who care for them. In this Conversations with Leaders event\, Dr. James Downar and Louise Hanvey will explore what palliative care is\, address common myths and misconceptions\, and discuss the different types of care and supports available in Ottawa and beyond. Together\, they will reflect on how palliative care can support people in hospitals\, hospices\, and at home\, while also highlighting current research and emerging conversations shaping the future of care. The discussion will conclude with an opportunity for audience questions.\nJames Downar James Downar is a Critical Care and Palliative Care physician in Ottawa\, and has a Master’s degree in Bioethics. He is currently Professor and Head of the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa\, where he holds a Clinical Research Chair in Palliative and End of Life Care. He is an adjunct professor at the Australian Centre for Health Law Research at the Queensland University of Technology. He is the past President of the Canadian Critical Care Society and co-chair of the Pan-Canadian Palliative Care Research Collaborative.  He has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and was the principal investigator on more than 30 peer-reviewed grants. In 2025\, he received the King Charles III Coronation medal for contributions to Palliative Care in Canada\, and in 2021 he received the Award of Excellence from the Ontario Medical Association’s Section on Palliative Medicine. \nLouise Hanvey Louise Hanvey is the volunteer lead for the Conversations & Advance Care Planning program at Compassionate Ottawa. She is a retired registered nurse who has worked with many national palliative care initiatives. Most recently she was the Project Director for the Advance Care Planning in Canada Project with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association. As part of her responsibilities she launched the campaign: Speak Up: Start the conversation about end-of-life care.
