SUMMARY:Conversations with Leaders – Compassionate Communities: Learning from International Experience
DESCRIPTION:This live virtual event will feature a conversation between Kerrie Noonan and Pam Grassau about compassionate communities in Australia\, the successes and challenges of building a compassionate community\, and a way to understand more about a community’s skills\, experience\, social actions\, and knowledge surrounding death\, dying\, caregiving and loss. There will be time for questions and comments following the discussion. \nRegister hereDr. Kerrie Noonan is the director of The Death Literacy Institute. Over the past 25 years\, Kerrie has been working to create a more death literate society\, one where people and communities have the practical know-how needed to plan well and respond to dying\, death and grief. Her research and practice involve death and grief literacy\, compassionate communities\, and end of life care. She is a clinical psychologist and an adjunct researcher at Western Sydney University. She contributes internationally as a faculty member of Fellowship in Palliative Care and as a council member of Public Health Palliative Care International. \nDr. Pamela Grassau is an Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work at Carleton University. Pam’s primary areas of research and practice are patient and family caregiver experiences of advanced illness; end of life and bereavement; interprofessional health care providers working in hospice and palliative care; public health approaches to illness\, end of life and bereavement; and social work research and pedagogies. In addition to numerous articles and research projects\, Pam is the Principal Investigator of a 3 1/2-year (2019-2022) project called “Healthy End of Life Project (HELP) Ottawa: Offering\, Asking for and Accepting Help; Creating an End of Life Collaborative Community Culture.” \nThe first 500 registrants will be able to join the session via Zoom; others will be redirected to the live-stream on YouTube via the Compassionate Ottawa channel. A recording of the webinar will be posted on the Compassionate Ottawa YouTube channel after the session airs.
